The Mulgrave River and Barron River doesn’t flow through the city but within the boundary of the city. Within the city’s boundaries also lies the highest mountain in Queensland- Mount Bartle Frere. Cairns lie in the vicinity of the Great Barrier Reef and the Tropical rainforests and thus form a gateway to these worlds famous Heritage listed destinations.
The Northern Beaches of the city are of less elevation and extends over many kilometers consisting of beaches like Holloways Beach, Machans Beach, Trinity Park, Trinity Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Kewarra Beach, Clifton Beach, Palm Cove and Ellis Beach.
Apart from this, Cairns has a wide-ranging topography with tidal wetlands, mudflats, freshwater lakes, mangrove swamps and coastal plains.
