The Kuranda Scenic railway, which lies within the Barron George National Park, was constructed in 1882 and 1891. The construction of the railways during that time was considered a great engineering success. Hundreds of workers were used build the 15 hand made tunnels and 37 bridges that are a part of the scenic railways.
The railway that makes it way from the Cairns to the Kuranda helps you to discover the history of the tropical North. The 90 minutes ride through the World Heritage listed Tropical Rainforests unravels before you the awesome nature. Get enthralled as you see the spectacular views from the open air railway train windows. The sublime beauty of the landscape is perfect place to take some of the most beautiful snaps.
Timings
The famous Kuranda railway operates from 10:15 in the morning and continues till 5:15 in the evening.
Rates
Any adult requires $105 while children require $ 55. If you are with your family then you are required to pay $265.
What to see
As you travel in the classic timber carriages enjoy the rugged mountains, steep gorges, lush forests, and spectacular waterfalls from a height of 300 meters. See the beautiful Barron River and the Stony Creek waterfalls. As you pass through the waterfalls, the train transverses a bridge offering a panoramic view on your left.
When you reach Kuranda, you can visit the Rainforest, the Tapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park, the Bird World and many more. You can have a great time enjoying the breakfast at the Freshwater Connection Restaurant.
Fare notes
Confessional fares are there for students, Australian resident Pensioners and senior citizens. Children below four require no tickets. Fares do not include meals and drinks.
