It is located at distance of 12 kilometers from the Atherton and 37 kilometers from Mareeba. General information The dam has a major contribution in conserving the waters of the Barron River which is used for irrigation and hydro power generation. A total of 800 framers are helped by the construction of this dam who get the water from the channel system or by private diversions systems from the streams. The decision to build the dam was taken in 1952. The construction work started in 1953 and it came to an end in 1968 with a total expenditure of $12,666,000. Attractions The Atherton Tablelands with the Tinaroo Mountain ranges at its backdrop is one of the most beautiful sights in North Queensland. The lake Tinaroo is a popular recreational destination thereby attracting tourists al round the year. The Danbulla State Forest is another beautiful place to visit. Visit the Eacham Shrine at the southern end of the lake. This part has been developed by the Queensland Water Resources Commission to promote tourism.
