Hockey was first played in Cairns in 1927 and has developed as one of the regions largest sports. Hockey in Cairns is played year round with a winter competition, indoor hockey and a summer social season that attracts approximately 1200 players. A two story clubhouse was constructed in 1984 and the first international standard playing (artificial) surface was constructed in 1991. A replacement surface was laid in 1997 and this mat was replaced 2005.
