Operated by the Cairns Port Authority about seven kilometers north of Cairns CBD in the outskirts of Aeroglen the Cairns International Airport is situated between the Mount Whitfield and Trinity Bay. It serves international , domestic as well as general aviation flights along with a few helicopter operators. The airport operates flights to almost all the major Australian cities and tourism centers, to some of the regional communities of Far North Queensland, and some of the international destinations of the Asia- Pacific region with linkages to the other part of the world. The chief runway of the airport is about 3200 meters long. Another smaller runway about 925 metres long meant for general aviation lies parallel to it. The ultimate approach of the to the main runaway is positioned overhead the Northern Beach. The western part of the airport is used for general aviation whereas the national and international flight terminals are on the reclaimed mangrove swamps on the eastern side. Both the terminals are constructed about two hundred metres away from one another. The air traffic control tower is also in this part of the airport. The airport acts as a base for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Queensland Emergency Service and the Australian Airlines till it was functioning.
