Golf as a sport is very popular in Australia and has been played in this continent
for more than one and a half century. The oldest golf course in Australia was
built in Bothwell in the year 1839. This course is however not known as the oldest
golf club in Australia as it was owned and used privately by a Scotsman Alexander
Reid. It was established as a golf club only in 1902. The honor of being the oldest
golf club thus goes to The Australian Golf Club in Sydney and the Royal Melbourne
Golf Club. The Australian Golf Club was founded in 1882 but discontinued its activity
and resumed function only in 1895. Royal Melbourne was founded in 1891 and thus
it rightfully claims to be the oldest "continuous club". Supervising
all golf related activities in Australia is the national governing body of golf
in Australia called Golf Australia. Golf Australia's objective is to raise the
level of interest and participation in the game from grassroots golfers through
to the elite levels, spectators, volunteers and associated industry bodies.
Golf is equally if not more popular in Canberra and the Australian Capital
Territory. The ACT region boasts of more than twenty seven golf courses out
of which three are ranked within the top hundred golf courses in Australia.
That golf is immensely popular in Canberra is apparent from its numerous golf
courses which dot the city. Its highest ranked golf course is the Royal Canberra
Golf Club. Royal Canberra golf Club was previously known as the Canberra Golf
Club. It is situated in the Yarralumla suburbs against the magnificent backdrop
of the Westbourne Woods.
The Yowani Country Club is also one of the finest golf clubs in Canberra. It
has been ranked 50th in Australia and is suited for golfers of all kinds of
playing levels.
Another very highly rated golf club in Canberra is the Federal Golf Club. The
Federal Golf Club with its 18-hole golf course, par 73 layout, and 6312 square
meter premises has been the venue for four NSW PGAs.
