When the World War II was ended, , Mr. E.K. White (later Sir Ernest)- the Federal President of the Australian American Association, suggested that a Memorial be constructed to convey the thanks of the Australian people to the United States of America for its contribution to the defense of Australia. The late J.B. Chifley, then Prime Minister of Australia, encouraged the suggestion. In 1948, the Federal Council of the Australian American Association determined "to set up a monument or statue shaped American War Memorial, Canberra, to honour the services and sacrifices of the United States forces in Australia and to mark the Australian-American comradeship in arms".
McConnell of Sydney constructed American War Memorial, Canberra, and the construction was started in December 1952 and completed in February 1954. The construction cost was100, 000 pound, which was increased, with about two thirds coming from public subscription. The Memorial is dedicated to the vital help given by the United States of America, with the following inscription reads:
"NATIONAL MEMORIAL, IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE, OF THE VITAL HELP GIVEN BY THE, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DURING, THE WAR IN THE PACIFIC 1941-45, UNVEILED BY, HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II, FEBRUARY 16TH 1954."
American War Memorial, Canberra is known as "Bugs Bunny" or "the Rabbit Ears" by locals. This Memorial remains open 24 hours daily.
