Canberra is a wonderfully planned city, with amazing architecture and public spaces that form some of the best sightseeing locations and tourist attractions of the city. One of the most famous landmarks in Canberra is the Captain Cook Memorial Globe, Canberra. The Captain James Cook Memorial, which includes the Captain Cook Memorial Globe, and the Captain Cook Memorial Jet was erected by the Commonwealth Government to venerate the Bicentenary of Captain James Cook's first sighting of the east coast of Australia, and was officially unveiled on 25 April 1970 by Queen Elizabeth II. The Captain Cook Memorial Globe, Canberra is located on the northern shore of the Lake Burley Griffin, next to the jet, and is a bronze, copper and enamel globe of the Earth, on which Captain Cook's voyages of discovery are sketched. The globe was designed by Walter Ralston Bunning and shows the three routes of Cook's voyages. The surrounding bronze handrail details and describes these voyages he undertook, with explanations of ports of call. The Captain Cook Memorial Globe, Canberra is an open-cage globe, and features the Meridians of longitude and parallels of latitude, and has landmasses depicted in beaten bas-relief copper.
