Canberra, the federal capital of the island-nation Australia is a place that grew amidst a lot of trouble, political infighting, wars and the Great Depression. However, over the past years, Canberra has advanced and settled down, and is now a successful modern city. There are a number of historical sites spread all over the city that are witness to the years of Canberra's growth. Of the many places, one site that should be mentioned is the Deasland Homestead, Canberra.

The Deasland Homestead, Canberra was built in 1890, by a very well-known member of the early Ginninderra community, a certain George Harcourt. This person served as a storekeeper, and was the Post Master of the Ginninderra Village between the years of 1862-1882.

The Deasland Homestead, Canberra was the residence of George Harcourt, and is an extremely solid and commanding construction, and served as an indication of the status and position of the owner of the house. George Harcourt also became famous as the one after whom the hill behind the Deasland Homestead, Canberra, as well as the George Harcourt Inn was named.

The Deasland Homestead, Canberra is one of the oft-visited places in Canberra, but is a private property that cannot be entered into very easily. However, when viewed from the Ginninderra Blacksmith's Workshop, the site is much better seen. It has been ear-marked as a Heritage Place by the Government of Australia, and consists of a single storied homestead, a tennis court, and a number of outbuildings.
