The archive consists from hundreds of thousands of films and television productions and innumerable recordings, radio programs, scripts and printed documents ready for reference. The huge collection of the technical equipments like recorders and radio and television apparatus, and historic recordings are there too. These materials are kept in the exhibition area for display as well.
ScreenSound Australia offers an array of services in helping to access the National Collection, lodge or donate film related materials and is a great instrument in gathering knowledge about Australia's screen and sound heritage.
As history beckons, the work of this institute started off to the date back to the Historical Film and Speaking Record Library (part of the then Commonwealth National Library). This was established on 11 December 1935 after the decision taken in the cabinet. The sound archive was formed as a separate part of the Commonwealth collecting institution in 1984.
From 1st July 2003, ScreenSound Australia has become a part of the Australian Film Commission and its name has been changed to its original version of the National Film and Sound Archive.
