When you are on a holiday to Canberra, then it is better that you have knowledge of the city's etiquette & behavior, as it will help you mix with the local people easily. By learning about their behavioral pattern you will be able to develop a rapport with the local people and thus move around easily.

The people of the city have a highly casual and informal attitude. The men are expected to shake hands when they meet for the first time. Women greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. This is also the same when a man meets women. However, one must note that it is done only if you are familiar with the person. Otherwise a warm " hello" or "good morning" is the best way to greet a person.

Clothing is an important part of the etiquette in Australia. If you are attending a meeting then men are supposed to wear a business suit in dark colors, while the women are expected to wear formal; skirts and blouses or a dress. In other times you can wear casual clothes and move around. After meetings you can exchange business cards.

While conversing with one another, the men are not supposed to become physically demonstrative. You should also not wink at women. The people are extremely punctual. You can give small gifts when invited to someone's house. You are also not supposed to litter the roads. During meetings and conversations, it is better that you give an opinion after listening properly to what other have to say. Maintaining good eye contact when talking to someone is considered an important etiquette and behaviors in Canberra.

If you are single male traveling in a taxi, then you should sit in the front seat. English is the language of communication in the city and one should try and communicate in this language.

The etiquette and behavior in Canberra is something worth taking note of. It is similar to those in North Americana and Britain and will help you to interact with the locals easily.
