Australian Etiquette

Etiquettes in "The Lucky Country" are much more relaxed and do not conform to the more formal European prescripts. The social behavior in this God endowed country is ruled by the ingrained values such as equality, fraternity and championship of the underdog's cause. Rather than emphasizing on hierarchy, equality is stressed upon. The use of titles such as Sir, Madam, Mr., Ms etc do not come easily to the average Australian. The value of universal brotherhood is so deep-rooted that the usual address as “Mate” comes easily to the Australian. This however may sound disrespectful to foreigners and tourists. A blunt statement may sound brusque to the foreigners but it is their simplicity that is the stunning aspect of the average Australian's behavior. Just as an unsolicited display of superiority, financial or social is sniggered at, acceptance of charity too goes against the very spirit of equality and self-respect. Modesty is highly appreciated in Australian society.

Chocolates, books and flowers are the appropriate gifts for the host. Wine, which is produced aplenty in Australia, would not be deemed of much value. Women are treated with respect and laws deal strictly with racial and sexual discrimination. Other social and dining customs match well with the British etiquettes and mannerisms.

The beer culture of Australia is mention worthy. Beer is bought in rounds and everyone has a go at buying his mates beer. Being included in the shout is equivalent of being included among the peer group. Beer needs to be drunk quickly so as not to fall behind the group and it is considered offensive to let the beer warm.

Business etiquettes of Australians follow their social conduct closely. Work often speaks for itself and undue stress upon titles and qualification is not welcome. Punctuality is appreciated and bargaining is obsolete. Direct and crisp deals are highly appreciated.
