Chinese New Year

Darwin, the little outback town in the Northern territory of Australia, is a cosmopolitan city, that is proud of its varied cultures and hues. The fact that it is close to many Asian countries has ensured that it has had a number of Asian influences. And, the country that has had maximum influence on Darwin is China. The Chinese came to Darwin during the Gold Rush in the 1850's and 1860's, after which they settled down, and there came to be a Chinatown in Darwin. The preparations for the celebrations start over a month in advance. People celebrate the New Year by wishing peace to friends and family, with rituals that are full of symbolism.

The messages wish for "happiness", "longevity", "wealth" etc. On New Year's Day, the children are given red envelopes containing cash. People visit friends and family with special treats. People behave in their best manner, and there is no swearing, lying, or shouting.

In short, though there may be a distance between China and these Chinese people in Darwin, they hardly leave any stone unturned in celebrating and ushering in the Chinese New Year, Darwin in the traditional manner.
