The Bin Film Festival is a relatively new festival, which made its inaugural show in the year 2000 in the month of December. The festival was the brainchild of the film director Jed Cahill. This is essentially a short-film festival, which is held every year. Initially the festival was held at a regional level only. However, due to its increasing popularity, it slowly became a national event before acquiring an international status. Today, this festival has placed Gold Coast on the world map. It is also the largest outdoor short-film festival in the whole of southeastern Queensland. By virtue of this festival Australian short films have gained international recognition and fame.
The Bin Film Festival is held in the parkland located right opposite the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. A total of more or less 16 short films are shown in this festival. The films that are shown over here are selected from a total of 600 entries from different countries of the world. This festival gives an opportunity to would-be film directors to make a place for themselves in the world of cinema. Awards are also given at the end of the festival. Various categories include best animation, cinematography, screenplay, and director along with others.
This festival also conducts a number of workshops for people who are eager to learn the art of filmmaking. Educational programs are also organized, allowing students to shoot and edit their own films. One must note that the focus remains on short films
