There are a large number of flights arriving at Gold Coast everyday. The Gold Coast Airport is thus one of the busiest airports in Australia, which receives a large number of tourists everyday.
The Gold Coast Airport is also known as the Coolangatta Airport. In fact, it was its original name. In the year 1999, the acting Prime Minister of Australia Douglas Anthony changed it to Gold Coast Airport after it was fully privatized.
The entire airport initially consisted of three strips, which were exclusively meant for emergency landings. However, in 1958, the taxiway and the runways were completely sealed thus enabling commercial aircrafts to land here. In the year 1980 a new terminal, called the Eric Robinson Building, was added to the airport. The entrance to the airport is located in the Bilinga Suburb, while the runway spreads across the border of Queensland and New South Wales. Currently the airport is undergoing extensive renovations and expansions and a new runway will be added to it by April 2007.
The Gold Coast Airport has all the facilities and features that one can find in any other airport of international standards. You can find duty free shops, resting and waiting rooms, florists, restaurants, telephone booths, information counters and the offices of a large number of travel agents. One can also find the offices of a large number of international as well as domestic airlines in this airport. The airport also provides huge flight information screens here. One can also hire light aircrafts and helicopters from this airport.
The airport receives both domestic as well as international flights. Some of the major airlines that regularly operate here include Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue, Freedom Air, and Singapore Airlines among others. As per statistics, the airport handles around 2 million passengers every year.
The Gold Coast Airport with its numerous services and facilities has acquired a lot of importance and has thus become one of the major airports in Australia.| Hotels in Gold Coast | |
