The Antarctic Tasmanian Midwinter Festival Hobart held in the month of June is organized to celebrate the winter solstice of the Antarctic year. It is a festival filled with fun frolic and gaiety.

The Antarctic Tasmanian Midwinter Festival at Hobart is an annual event, which is held during mid-June when the winter solstice occurs in the southern hemisphere. The Winter Solstice basically brings about a change in the seasons, and hence is celebrated with great pomp in Hobart. In Antarctica, the winter solstice puts an end to the long polar nights. As Hobart is considered as the gateway to Antarctica, hence this city celebrates this festival with great vigor. This grand event is celebrated to commemorate Tasmania strong links with Antarctica, the frozen continent. The basic idea is to enable people to learn more about Antarctica.

The Tasmanian Antarctic Community organizes this festival. A large number of exhibitions, demonstrations are held during the festival. The major events held during Antarctic Tasmanian Midwinter Festival, includes the Antarctic Solstice Festival, Lantern Parade and a photography competition called the One Planet Extreme Environment Photo Competition. A large number of films are shown in the Longest Night Film Festival. A major attraction of the festival is the Huskies Picnic held in the Royal Botanical Garden. The basic theme of this festival centers on the age of Antarctica Explorations.
