Royal Hobart Regatta is another major water-based event held in the city of Hobart
in Tasmania. This fabulous maritime event clearly highlights Hobart's love for
the water.
The Royal Hobart Regatta is an annual event held in the month of February.
This event was first held in the year 1838 and was started by Sir John Franklin,
the then Governor of Tasmania. It is thus one of the oldest festivals of Hobart.
It is three-day event and the day on which it is held is a public holiday. The
Royal Hobart Regatta is held on the 'Regatta Grounds' located in Queens Domain
on the western side of Derwent River. The event has acquired international status
as large numbers of sailors, from all across the world, come to Hobart to participate
in this amazing festival.
Hobart Royal Regatta event basically consists of a large number of competitions
between the Australian Merchant Navy and the local sailors. Some of the major
events that are held over here include sailing, swimming, rowing, wood chopping,
jet skiing, dragon boat racing, tug of war and a swimming competition along
the width of the Derwent River. You can see the sky diving displays of the parachute
regiment of the Australian Army or enjoy the military aircraft fly-pasts put
up by the Royal Australian Air Force. The Royal Australian Navy sends a flagship
for the Royal Hobart Regatta. You can also get to see the acrobatic performances
of the RAAF Roulettes. Other events that are held over here include the Miss
Regatta girl competition and an attendance ceremony by the governor of Tasmania.
Visitors and participants of the Royal Hobart Regatta in Hobart are provided
with free food and beer. This is an age-old tradition that has continued from
the time the festival was first held. Entry to the festival is also free of
cost.
