The Moorilla Museum of Antiquities in Hobart boasts of a unique collection of items which can be rarely found anywhere. This private collection is valued at over $10 million and houses the African Gallery with gold, sculpture and beaded artifacts.
The Egyptian Gallery includes items like a sarcophagus while the Mesopotamian Gallery, the Roman mosaics and the Pre-Columbian Gallery includes gold, ceramics and sculpture from Central America. This famous building was designed by architect Roy Grounds. This building is included in the heritage-listed former home of Claudio Alcorso, the founder of Moorilla Estate.
The Moorilla Museum of Antiquities in Hobart also houses a comprehensive library. The books in this library relates to all aspects of ancient civilizations, art in antiquity, and religion. The books are available to the public for research but only by prior permission. There is also an area where the public can take the books and read. The ambience is very calm and quiet here.
The Moorilla Estate focuses mainly on the winery and the adjacent vineyards that produce a variety of excellent cool climate wines from the Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot grapes.
