Sub Antarctic Plant House

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
The Sub-Antarctic Plant House, Hobart houses one of the most exciting and unusual collections of Sub-Antarctic plants. It is situated at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Hobart, Tasmania and is nestled inside a small and specially built edifice.

The Sub- Antarctic Plant House has a unique collection that you will not find anywhere in the world. Here one can see plants from sub-Antarctic islands exposed in climatically-controlled surroundings, where the chilly fog and mist mirrors the wet, cold circumstances of their island homes. This project has been completed in collaboration with other partners like the University of Queensland, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service and the Australian National Botanic Gardens (Canberra).

The staff of Sub- Antarctic Plant House, Hobart has jointly gathered these plants in coordination with the scientist on field trips to Macquarie Island. The House measures 14 x 6 meters and has been designed in the pattern of a teardrop, characterized by high curving walls and a clear polycarbonate roof.

Cold water at ground level, along with air conditioning and fogging mist systems, internally cools the Sub- Antarctic Plant House, Hobart. This device has been adopted to enable species to be studied under realistic conditions as part of a research project which aims at understanding the ecological processes and the environmental factors that rule Sub-Antarctic plant communities and species. It for this reason that the visitors coming here experience chilly winds and fogs. You can also hear the sounds of wildlife from the Island during different seasons.

The Sub- Antarctic Plant House, Hobart will give you a very unusual experience. You will really miss out on something in Hobart if you don't visit Sub-Antarctic Plant House.
