Tasmanian Transport Museum

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
The Tasmanian Transport Museum, Hobart is one of the most interesting museums in the world. The society began in 1960 when four young Hobart men requested the MTT to donate a Hobart tramcar for preservation.

The society was formally set up in 1962. The museum was officially opened on 3 December 1983, and since then there has been major development of the site like laying down the rail track and the construction of buildings in which the collection is housed. This amazing museum is a must visit for the tourists of Hobart.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum, Hobart was set up keeping in mind two basic motives. Firstly it wanted to establish and maintain a museum in which items of interest concerning Tasmanian transport could be preserved and displayed and secondly it wanted to encourage an interest and research in the field of transport, with special reference to Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum is located off Anfield Street, Glenorchy, and is opposite to the Northgate shopping centre. The collection of this unique transport museum includes railway locomotives, rail motors, carriages and wagons, trams, trolley buses, motorbuses, stationary steam engines and many other items of historical interest.

There is also an exhibition of historical photographs and other small objects. The former New Town railway station has been resettled in the museum. This provides an original setting for the exhibition and functioning of rail vehicles. The signal box and other railway items, like signals and water columns, which are not functional and belong to the former Botanical Gardens, add to the railway feel of the station area.

The museum is open on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays, from 1:00 pm until at least 4:30 pm. Admission on train ride days is $8.00 adults and $4.00 children (includes unlimited train rides), and on non-operating days, admission is $6.00 adults and $3.00 children. Train trips are run at the museum twice a month, on the first and third Sunday.

The Tasmanian Transport Museum, Hobart will give you an experience worth cherishing. So hop on for the joyride of your life.
