As per the history of Hobart, the first settlements of this place started as early as 1803. At that time the city was a penal colony founded by a Lieutenant John Bowen. Settlements in this city first began on its eastern shores, called Risdon Cove. However, in the year 1804, the settlements were shifted to Sullivan's Cove. In ancient times it was thus a British colony. The city was named after Lord Hobart, the then colonial secretary of that region. At that time it was known as Hobart Town.
Historical records show that the original inhabitants of Hobart were the people belonging to the Mouheneer tribe, a semi nomadic tribe of this region. After the arrival of European settlers, a large number of battles were fought between the aboriginals and the Europeans, which ultimately led to the eradication of this ancient tribe. Thereafter, the place was occupied by the free settlers and the convicts, who were sent on exile to this place.
Over the years the Hobart grew into a major trade center. The History of Hobart clearly points out to the fact that city was an important base for the British Navy. As the city is located near the shore of the Derwent River, it grew into a major port of Australia. History of Hobart shows that during the 19th century, the newest docks were built in Salamanca Place. A large number of shipment activities were regularly carried over here. The presence of the port led to the growth of a large number of other industries here like shipbuilding, newsprint, zinc and even chocolate. Rapid development of the city took pace during the 20th century.
The occurrence of so many industries also led to the increase in the population of the city. It transformed from a rowdy town to a busy and an economically advanced city. Hobart Town became a city in the year 1842 and was renamed as Hobart in the year 1875.
Today, Hobart is one of the prime business districts of Australia. The rich
history of Hobart, large numbers of ancient monuments and the numerous natural
wonders have also made this city a major tourist destination of Australia.
