The Hobart City Council is an administrative body, which governs the city of Hobart. The Hobart city council is the oldest councils in Australia.

The Hobart City Council consists of twelve Aldermen and is headed by the mayor of Hobart. The mayor is referred to as the Lord mayor of Hobart. The Aldermen are the decision making body of the council. It is they who give all the necessary directions regarding the upkeep, maintenance and the administration of the city. The functions of the council are looked after by the General Manager, who in turn is supported by a Corporate Management Team. The tem consists of directors, each of whom represent the eight divisions of the councils.

The city council of Hobart conducts elections every two years in the month of October. The council follows the postal ballot system of elections and it is not compulsory to vote. The elections are supervised by the Tasmanian Electoral Commission, while the Returning Officer is in charge of running the elections. Anybody registered for the House of Assembly elections for their respective municipal area, is eligible to vote in the Hobart City Council elections.

The council holds its meetings every month. Usually two meetings are held every month. The public can participate in these meetings. Agendas are provided to the people at least four days prior to holding of the meeting.

The Hobart City Council looks after the maintenance of the city and aims at making it one of the most liveable cities of the country. It takes steps to preserve and beautify its parks and gardens, regulate the construction of the buildings and planning of the city and protect the environment from pollution and make it safe and healthy. The council also arranges for a large number of health and environment programs for the people of the city. The council has introduced the Walking School Bus for the children who walk to school.

Hobart City Council with its numerous policies and programs has helped in making the city a fantastic place not only to live in but also to visit. It has also played a major role in promoting the tourism industry of the city.
