of Tasmania is blessed with a spectacular ocean, river and majestic mountain backdrop.
The fascinating blend of heritage and lifestyle, scenery and vibrant culture makes
it more attractive. There are many sightseeing places in this panoramic city.
The Shot Tower, Hobart is one of them. Besides the beauty it has historical significance
as well that draws tourists here.
Shot Tower, Hobart was constructed in 1870 by Scottish immigrant Joseph Moir
for the production of shot. This sandstone tower rises 48 meters above the banks
of the Derwent due to which it offers outstanding panoramas up, down and across
the river. The Shot Tower has a diameter of 10 meters at the base and 3.9 meters
at the top. Lead shot in this factory was produced by dropping molten lead through
a sieve at the top of the tower and by the time it hit the water at the bottom
it was cold and spherical in shape. Today his heirs own the tower.
One can climb the 300 steps to the top and have spectacular, but vertigo-inducing
views of the Derwent River estuary. If you have a kid you need to take care
here. At the base of the tower, there is a small museum, which throws light
on the history of the family and information on the process of making a shot.
There is also a craft shop and a tea room. The surrounding garden is just the
correct destination for a tranquil walk to absorb the peaceful and calm ambience
of this place.
