The Tasman Bridge is one of the most popular bridges of Hobart. This splendid
long span bridge over the famous Derwent River was opened for the public on August
17, 1964. The length of the Tasman Bridge is about 1,395 meters. This popular
bridge is the only medium of connection between City Centre located on the eastern
suburbs and all other popular locations situated on the northeastern Coast of
the region.
The Tasman Bridge is the very important bridge in Hobart. This bridge provides
a direct link between the City Centre and Hobart Airport. While crossing the
river one can glance up at the fabulous river and can also look downwards to
the sea. This bridge connects places like Hobart International Airport and Belle
Rive Oval.
For the pedestrian the bridge has a footway. The Tasman Bridge does not provide
any path for bicycles. The bridge also has a navigation channel. The first ship
to use this navigation channel was Galway on 18th august 1964.
In the year 1975 a huge ship rammed the Tasman Bridge. This caused damage to
the bridge. Ferryboats were used to carry the passengers to their destinations
till the bridge was rebuilt.
The reconstruction of the famous Tasman Bridge began in the year 1975 in the
month of October. Another important reason for the reconstruction of the Tasman
Bridge was to include some safety measures in it. After the inclusion of the
safety measures the bridge was again officially opened in the year 1977 in the
month of October.
