Festival of Kites Launceston

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
Kite festivals have come up a long way and Launceston in Australia is not far behind on the popularity list and it was way back in 1988 that the first kite festival was held in Launceston as a part of the bicentennial celebrations of Australia.
The festival became quite popular in the inaugural edition and attracted loads of talent from around the world.
This was followed up by a flood of queries for another kite festival to the organizers of the original event that was led by Jeremy Carson. This has led to the formation of the Roaring Forties International Kite festival.
The festival attracts a lot of crowd which includes a large number of school children and other general visitors who are kite lovers.
The city has been lucky to receive a large gift from the Japanese kite Association in the form of a huge Edo kite. The kite is seven meters by five meters and is made of washi paper and bamboo.
Competitions are held regularly as a part of the festival and fighter kite competition is a part of the festival that everyone tries to win. The fighter kites were using the traditional manja kites and displaying skill that look out of this world. The kites had a kind of height restriction of about three hundred meters due to aviation restrictions.
The kite festival is one of the most neatly organized festivals in Tasmania and social functions are held as a part of the festival which are attended and enjoyed by all and sundry.
A dinner to bring the competitors together is also arranged and there are novel competitions like the kite making competitions.
The best part of the festival is the kind of fun that it could provide to all the citizens of Launceston including the hoards of school children to had come in to see these majestic flying objects in the sky.
