The Targa Tasmania is a rally event that is held on a Tarmac in the island state of Tasmania and it has been held there for more than a decade. The first race being held in the year 1992. The event inherits its name from a motoring event that used to be held in the island of Sicily called Targa Florio. The rally initially started as a five day event and it was extended only by a day for its tenth anniversary in 2001 after which it had reverted back to its five day format. The Targa Rally is one among the various Tarmac Rally events that is held in Australia and has found its counterparts in other places like Targa New Zealand and Targa New Foundland. The rally attracts loads of talent both from with varying degree of seriousness and different makes of cars. Some times the number of cars can go up to three hundred which include the best of tourists, sports and GT cars grueling hard on the rough and tough roads of the island. The cars have to run for more than thousand kilometers and they get the opportunity to run on the scenic routes and mountain passes. Some of the cars taking part in the rally include the Ferrari F40 and Testarossa, Maserarti Barchetta, Lamborghini Diablo VT, Lotus Espirit S4, Porsche 911, 356, 928 and BMW, along with some of the classic and historic vehicles such as Lancia Aurelia, Jaguar SS100, Lagonda Rapide, Delage D6/70, Bugati Type 35B, Hispano Suiza, Invicta 'S' Type, Locomobile Speedster, Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, and Alfa Romeo Mille Miglia Spider. The route will undergo a major change this year as the event organizers have decided to revamp nearly twenty five percent of the total routes, thus trying to make the whole event exciting enough to be remembered by all the competitors.
