Launceston is placed on 41° 25' south latitude and longitudinally lies on 147° 07' east. The topography of Launceston comprises of a winding river valley as the city is placed by the banks or the Tamar River. A range of mountains lay to the south of the city, adding to the charm of the place.
The Tamar River valley is a beautiful destination and the quiet water provides ample scopes for a pleasant cruising. The river remains navigable all through the year, and is a popular hub of tourists. The coasts are home to several species of water birds which nest along the quiet coves.
The banks of the river have the perfect topography for growing grapes, and consequently a line of vineries have flourished along the coasts. The valley of Tamar is dotted with golden yards of chardonnay are grown along the banks to supply some of the finest wines in the area.
To the west of the city is the Cataract Gorge which stands as another popular destination for the visitors. The gorge is a towering formation that rises steeply from the banks of the South Esk River as it meets the Tamar. The Gorge is an ideal location for hiking as the topography provides a number of hiking trails for the climbers. Dotted with a number of pools which are nestled among the scattered vegetation, the rugged landscape stands out as an exquisite locale and a jewel in Launceston's geography.

as the place is colder than the other cities of Tasmania.
