a joint venture of the Councils of Launceston City, St Leonards and Lilydale,
as they united to form the present Council in May 1985. Since then the Launceston

has emerged as the largest city council in Tasmania. It operates from 8 in the

The Launceston City Council oversees the maintenance and operation of the major
districts and institutes of the city. Several museums, halls and parks are maintained

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery is a prized possession of the Launceston
City Council. Located in two different buildings in the Royal Park and the Inveresk
site, the museum narrates the tale of the city as it emerged from a colonial
town to the present modern centre. The Albert Hall, Blessington/North Esk Memorial
Hall, Dilston Hall and Karoola Hall are a few more places which the council
takes care of.
The City Council of Launceston looks after the numerous parks and natural reserves
that are dotted across the city. The natural landscape of Tasmania has blessed
the city with an exquisite scenic beauty which the council seeks to preserve
and hold up before its tourists. The Cataract Gorge Reserve has every amenity

historic park comprising of a number of attractions. Three community gardens
at Ravenswood, Punchbowl, and the Northern Suburbs are also looked after by
the Council.

The Princess Theatre and Earl Arts Centre are the most popular theatres
