J. Boag & Son Brewery was established as a brewery company in 1883 by James
Boag and son. It is located in Launceston. It is at present owned by San Miguel
Corporation, which is a Philippine-based beverage and packaging company.
History of J. Boag & Son Brewery, Launceston
Before the ownership of the brewery fell into the hands of James Boag I and
his son James II in 1883, J. Boag & Son Brewery was known by the name Esk
Brewery. Soon the reputation of the brewery grew, which necessitated the production
to increase from seven hogheads per week to 500 per week in a span of mere four
years.
It was in the 1990s that J. Boag & Son Brewery launched its popular James
Boag's Premium Lager and Boag's Strongarm Bitter. The turn of the century saw
J. Boag and Son being taken over by San Miguel Corporation. In 2002 J. Boag's
Premium Light won the 'New Beer of the Year'. Also in the same in year, Tamar
Hotel was opened by The Boag's Centre for Beer Lovers.
What's for the Tourist
J. Boag & Son Brewery offers guided tours to beer lovers or those
plainly interested in its history around the brewery every week day. The tour
provides interesting knowledge ion the process of brewing and packaging. Prior
booking is a must and charges apply.
There is also the Boag's Centre for Beer Lovers in the famous Tamar Hotel.
The Centre includes a museum of the Brewery's memorabilia, photographs of the
Boag family and many more. No entry fee is charged for admission to Boag's Centre.
Not a few beer lovers in Australia vouch for the unique taste of J. Boag &
Son Brewery beers. A lot could be attributed to Tasmania pleasant climate which
is conducive to the growth of good quality Hops.
