History of Waverly Woolen Mills
Formally established in 1874, Waverly Woolen Mills takes its name from the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott's 'Waverley' novels. The hysteria of Gold Rush had culminated in a singular increase in the population of Australia, which meant that the country's dependence on shipments of simple goods from England reached it high point. It was at this point of time that Mr. Peter Bulman envisaged the feasibility of yarn mills in Australia. Warmed by his glowing visions, Bulman braved the chill of England and Scotland as he took a tour of the mills in the countries. The mill first started work on May 13, 1874. The wool derived was put on an auction where it fetched little over 1000 pounds; the mill received additional 1000 pounds from the government on February 2, 1875. Distillery Creek was chosen as an appropriate site for the establishment of Waverly Woolen Mills owing to easy availability of water.
