The Jail House Grill is a must visit when it comes to dining in Launceston. The restaurant bears a heritage of more than a century, and stands as one of the major dining destinations of the city. The restaurant is housed in a building which had been constructed with bricks which the convicts made at a nearby brick kiln. The name Jail House is therefore apt for the place which owes its origin to the convicts of the period. Jail House has been built in the typical fashion of a Victorian or Georgian public house. The rich history which looms over the building has earned it a different status in the Tasmanian Heritage Council and it is today prized as an important possession of the community. Jail House Grill is popular destination among the tourists as well as the local diners. Serving Launceston delicious food for more than a century now, Jail House Grill prides itself as one of the best in the city. Experienced chefs bring to the tables an array of dishes and liquors. The restaurant has a well crafted wine list, most of which comprises of the fine drink produced in the vineries that line the Tamar Valley. Jail House boasts of an authority over steaks as a wide variety of them is cooked to perfection by the chefs. Since Jail House Grill is primarily a family restaurant, the set up is not spacious enough for hosting parties or large gatherings. Small parties however, can be arranged with prior bookings. A party of around 50 can be arranged on the weekdays, though the restaurant does not allow a gathering of more than 35 on the weekends, as the rush is greater on those days.
