Astor Theatre (The), Melbourne is all about atmosphere. Traveling back to the grand old days of cinema going in the 1930s, the hall is alone worth a visit for its art deco architecture. If you are in Melbourne and looking for a special screening of 70mm classic films, then your destination is this cinema hall. No need to be disappointed if you wish to watch a recent release for The Astor shows both classic films and recent releases in a double feature format each evening.

Inviting foyers and comfortable chairs, a huge screen and excellent sound quality, this theatre is a classic, single-screen cinema with stalls and a dress circle - the overall seating capacity of 1,150 that is reduced from the original 1,700.

Constructed in the 1930s this cinema hall still retains the art-deco charm of that period. The Astor Theatre is in Melbourne, located in Chapel Street, St Kilda, at the intersection of Dandenong Road and Chapel Street.

The Astor Theatre was opened on Friday April 13, 1936. At that time, it had a seating capacity of 1692. The opening film was 'Hands Across the Table' starring Carole Lombard and Fred MacMurray. This cinema is really an exceptional survivor of a type of suburban picture theatre that appeared in the 1930s. This cinema hall was built keeping in view the contemporary trend of that time of building intimate theaters in the suburbs rather than putting an emphasis on the construction of mammoth picture palaces in the city.

The current operators of the Astor have sought to restore long-ignored inner features, like the theater's original bold color scheme, indirect lighting, and much of the internal equipments and furniture.

Enjoy in The Astor a true Australian tradition consisted in ‘classic’ double features, with a daily change of program. Astor Theatre (The), Melbourne bids you a hearty welcome to the world of Australian cinema.
