Mainly based in Sydney, Opera Australia is also established in Melbourne, and known as Opera Australia, Melbourne. Almost eight months of the year, the performance season of the Opera Australia runs at the Sydney Opera House, and the rest of its time is spent in the The Arts Centre in Melbourne, called the Opera Australia, Melbourne.

In 1977, Victoria State Opera (VSO), created the Schools Company and at present performing in New South Wales and Victoria. The Schools Company is administered from Opera Australia, Melbourne office.

In 1996, Opera Australia, Melbourne was created by the amalgamation of the Australian Opera and the Victorian State Opera (VSO) companies, subsequent to an important review of the government- aided performing arts companies in Australia, which was commissioned by the Australian Government.

With The Magic Flute of Mozart, Opera Australia, Melbourne took on a "pilot" regional tour to four states. After that, The Magic Flute of Mozart was performed at the Adelaide Festival; OzOpera acted The Magic Flute in The Barracks at Queenscliff, the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra, as well as in a cinema in Mudgee.

In 2003, Opera Australia, Melbourne produced eight productions to the State Theatre but in 2004, it produced seven productions; including a Gilbert and Sullivan, which is an obvious appeal to a wider audience, to increase box-office collections. In 2005 and 2006, Opera Australia, Melbourne produced seven productions and in 2006, one of the seven productions was Gilbert and Sullivan.
