Regent Theatre Melbourne

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
History

Regent Theatre, Melbourne personifies the glamor and vision of the bygone era. It happens to be one of the largest Theatres to be built in Australia by the Hoyts chain with a seating arrangement for 3277 people. It has got the largest Wurlitzer Theatre organ installed in Australia. 'Two Lovers', the curtain raising film of the Theatre starred Ronald Colman and Vilma Banky.

The Theatre was unfortunately destroyed by fire, because of a careless smoker in 1945. It was reopened again as a movie palace on December 16, 1947. In July 1970, the Theatre was again closed down. The organ was sold, and the Theatre was dispossessed of all its fittings. There were even plans to destroy the Theatre and to replace it with a multi-level office block .The plan was abandoned largely due to the "Save the Regent" campaign.

It took 23 long years, to fully restore the Theatre in its archetype splendor. To prepare it for its role as a 'lyric' Theatre, necessary modifications were also made. After fabulous restoration work, the Regent Theatre, Melbourne was again reopened in 1996 and now it proudly hosts a wide range of cultural activities. The restoration work amounted to $AU37 million. Since then the Regent Theatre, Melbourne has housed some great musical stage productions including, Sunset Boulevard, Show Boat, and Fiddler of the Roof with Topol.
