Melbourne Tram Service

Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
Comprising 244 route kilometers of track operated by 517 trams of six classes Melbourne's tramway system run on the 1435 mm gauge. Melbourne Tram Service is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and the eleventh largest in the world. The service features both heritage and modern blend.

Melbourne's tram service resumed with cable tram operations in the year 1885. The Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company operated the first cable line. The cable tram system ran successfully for 55 years. The system grew to 75 km of double track and 1200 cars and trailers.

Not only throughout the greater Melbourne area, but also throughout the Central Business District and the most main streets, trams are the main form of transport in this Australian city. Catch a City Circle Tram, a free service and reach or get around the Central Business District. This service runs around the perimeter of the CBD. However, traveling away from the CBD can also be undertaken by trams.

Trams run to the inner suburbs and in some instances a little further in Melbourne. Trams can be a very good mode of sightseeing, too. A light rail service runs to the popular tourist destinations of St Kilda and Port Melbourne (Beacon Cove).
