Australia - Adelaide - Brisbane - Alice Springs - Cairns - Canberra - Darwin - Gold Coast - Hobart - Melbourne - Newcastle - Perth - Port Douglas - Launceston - Sydney - Townsville
Founded under the patronage of His Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1981, the Australian Racing Museum is the only one amongst the museums in Australia devoted to horse racing in Australia. It is situated in Federation Square, Melbourne on Flinders Street and is a non-profitable organization.

The main function of Australian Racing Museum, Melbourne is to preserve the heritage of horse racing in Australia. The Australian Racing Museum, Melbourne brings the world of racing right into the heart of the city thus creating awareness about the race among the people. It has an excellent collection of objects related to racing which immortalizes great events in the history of horse racing. The museum arranges for special exhibitions. It holds interactive and multimedia attractions to both inform and entertain.

There is the Australian Racing Hall of Fame where induction is on the basis of contribution made to the racing industry. Principal racing clubs of Australia forward their nomination and members are chosen from among these nominees through voting. Inductees can be classified into four groups:

Horses which have raced on Australian racetracks and have an excellent record at the highest level of racing
Trainers with an outstanding contribution and a consistently brilliant performance
Jockeys with excellent contribution and results
Associates i.e. breeders, owners, administrators, media, and anyone who has made immense contribution to racing in Australia.

Ten highly regarded members from the industry form the selection panel. These panelists choose the members of the Australian Racing Hall of Fame. The first inductee was Arthur ‘Scobie’ Breasley.

The museum is home to the full skeleton of Carbine, winner of the 1890 Melbourne Cup, Phar Lap’s saddle and bridle, Tulloch’s heart, a rich collection of early racing footage and an 1872 Melbourne cup dress.

The Australian Racing Museum is open from 10am to 6pm on all days except for Christmas and Good Friday. Admission for adults in the museum costs $8 and on concession $5. Children under the age of twelve are allowed free admission while entrance charges for the entire family together will cost $20. Friends of the Museum are also allowed free admission. Guided tours, audio tours and entry into temporary exhibitions are allowed on admission into the Australian Racing Museum.

The Australian Racing Museum is one of the most visited of all the Melbourne museums and is considered amongst the foremost of the sports museums in Melbourne.
