The Medical History Museum is home to the oldest and finest collection of equipments and articles associated with any medical school in Australia. It had initially started just to record the history of Melbourne Medical School, its teachers, students and curriculum since they started existing from the 1850’s. It has a good collection of artifacts and documents catering to this period.
However, with the acquisition of the Australian Medical Association collection, the museum has broadened its scope. Today it covers the history of medical practice in Victoria, from the earliest colonial days till date.
One of the major attractions for those sightseeing in Melbourne, in the Medical History Museum, Melbourne, is the fully equipped 19th Century Savory and Moore Pharmacy on Display. This was shipped from London and installed in 1971 with more grants from the Wellcome Institute. The Medical History Museum, Melbourne has also hosted several exhibitions over the past few years. These exhibitions included ‘Treating the Past: How Medical Melbourne Came of Age’ and ‘Being Patient: Care and Convalescence, 1850-1950’.
It is one of the most-frequented museums in Melbourne. A distinguishing feature of this museum is the guided tours offered to the visitors and the students that can be arranged through prior appointments. These tours are conducted from Monday to Friday.
Apart from this, the general public is also free to visit the museum on all weekdays. Some of the artifacts on permanent display for the visitors are the historic microscope collections, amputation sets and bleeding and cupping equipments from the 1881 Exhibition and the early 19th-century Savory and Moore Pharmacy. However there are some special collections, which appear on a temporary basis as well only during exhibitions.
The Medical History Museum, Melbourne is open on weekdays from 9a.m to 6 p.m. and on Saturday only with prior appointments with the curator.
Admission to the museum is free of charge.
