The city of Melbourne, the capital city of the state of Victoria, is unanimously held as the cultural and financial hub of Australia. Steering the prosperity and development of the city is the Melbourne City Council, the seat of government in Melbourne. About the Melbourne City Council The City Council of Melbourne stands at 900 E. Strawbridge Avenue and comprises the following areas of the Melbourne city: the suburbs of Flemington, Kensington, West Melbourne, North Melbourne, East Melbourne, Parkville, Carlton North, Carlton and the Melbourne Central Business District (popularly referred to as the CBD). To the south of the Yarra River, the Melbourne City Council consists of Port Melbourne, Southbank, South Yarra and a certain portion of Prahran. However, in this context, it is worth mentioning that the Docklands Authority Area that lies to the west of the CBD does not fall under the aegis of the Melbourne City Council. The Melbourne City Council is headed by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne and he is usually regarded as a representative of the entire metropolitan zone of Melbourne. He has under him an arsenal of civic officials to dispense the day-to-day functioning of the City Council. To be precise, City Council, Melbourne, apart from its head, has council members representing the districts, a City Manager and his assistant, a City Attorney, a City Clerk, both with their respective deputies, and a Planning and Economic Development Director. The Activities of the Melbourne City Council Apart from being the seat of the Melbourne Government, the Melbourne City Council is entrusted with the development of the Melbourne city as well. Its developmental works include formulating and executing plans and policies regarding efficient waste management, preserving the public use places in the city, manning and upgrading the public health system, enhancing child care and pre-school facilities, providing care for the aged, promoting and conducting the locally held fairs, festivals and various cultural events. However, it is worthwhile to note here that there are several activities concentrated within the Melbourne city ambit that are actually overseen by the Victorian state government. This is primarily because of the pivotal role that Melbourne plays in the context of the economy and demographics of the entire state of Victoria. To elaborate, crucial infrastructure areas like the public transportation system, roads and certain other domains like the police forces and education above the pre-school standard lie in the hands of the state government. Even a cursory glance through the history of Melbourne would show you that in spite of the restrictions on its activities, the Melbourne City Council has labored and succeeded in giving the Melbournians a better quality of life.
