Australian Center for Contemporary Art (ACCA) is the best-known art gallery in Melbourne in the genre of contemporary art. This Melbourne art gallery is a major contemporary, dynamic, public art space upholding one of the most innovative, challenging and creative visual art forms of the present times.

Australian Center for Contemporary Art is an abode for the best artworks in Australia as well as world over. The Australian Center for Contemporary Art, Melbourne also promotes upcoming and new artists, both national and international, by putting their work on display. ACCA, however, focuses mainly on commissioning the work rather than collecting them. Hence the visitors can't just savor the artworks they can also possess them.

Australian Center for Contemporary Art was designed by the Melbourne based architect, Wood Marsh and was completed in 2002. The building is an architectural icon with its distinctive rusty steel façade in contrast with the shiny combination of metal and glass surface of the foyer's interior. The building is itself a fine specimen of contemporary art. The uniqueness of ACCA has made the place one of the best Melbourne tourist attractions.

The structure of Australian Center for Contemporary Art is conceived from the European model of the Kunsthalle or 'exhibition hall'. ACCA seems like a large shell made for display of contemporary art. The distinctive lobby at the art gallery leads to four gallery spaces of varying sizes giving the whole place an extravagant look. These significant features make ACCA a must-see place for those out on sightseeing in Melbourne.

Australian Center for Contemporary Art also houses the ACCA Café. This café has gained the reputation of serving the best coffee in Southbank area in Melbourne. The café has become a place for socializing for the visitors to the gallery, students, artists, workers and local residents. Few specialties on offer at the café are organic, fair trade Jasper coffee, a selection of organic herbal teas, soft drinks, and delicious biscuits.

ACCA also organizes certain educational programs free for all with the aim to increase the accessibility and raise the interest level regarding contemporary art among a wide range of audience. With this purpose ACCA conducts guided exhibition tours for the students, introductory classes for students and adults, floor talks by artists, workshops and seminars.
