The Melbourne Zoo is the common name for the Royal Melbourne Zoological Gardens. It is the oldest zoo in Australia and home to more than 350 animal species. Styled on the London Zoo it occupies an area of 55 acres on the Royal Park site. The zoo opened its door for general public in 1862 and it was here that the animals were transferred here from their initial home at the botanical gardens in Melbourne. Albert Alexander Cochrane Le Souef was the first to introduce rare animals to the zoo. During his tenancy gardens and picnic areas were developed. Today the zoo has become one of the best Melbourne tourist attractions.On chosen nights in January, February and March, the Zoological Gardens, Melbourne is open till 9:30 at night for the Zoo Twilights. The Roar and Snore evenings are for public to see the nocturnal animals. This zoo helps in the conservation, research programs, educational activities and international breeding programs for the endangered species. The historical Elephant House is available to the customers to spend the night in tents in the zoo.At the Melbourne Zoo, different atmospheres have been created for different animals:• African rainforest for the gorillas, mandrills, pigmy hippos and parrots• Asian rainforest for the tigers and otters• Australian bush for the koala, kangaroos, emus, echidnas and endangered hairy nose wombatsOther attractions at the Melbourne Zoo include:• The Butterfly House• The Great Flight Aviary• The Trail of the ElephantsThe Melbourne Zoo lures you while you are sightseeing in Melbourne.Situated in Parkville in the north of the central business district (CBD), 4 kilometers north from the centre of Melbourne, the Melbourne Zoo is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm throughout the year including special holidays like Christmas Day, Good Friday and all public holidays. The Friends of the Zoos volunteer guides provide tours through the Melbourne Zoo between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. They are qualified and well trained on the subject to answer any queries from the visitors. Admission prices for adults (16 years and over are) $22.00 and for children (4years to 15 years) is $11.00. Adult concession is $16.50 and senior concession is $20.00. Family (2 adults and 2 children) passes are charged $52.40. Disabled adult admission costs $16.50 and disabled child admission costs $5.00.
