Designed by Eminent architect Henry White, the historic Civic theater of New Castle in became functional in the year 1929. The architect was a specialist in making picture palaces and had proved his mettle by building about 183 thaters in Australia itself. Sydney State and Capitol theaters are the two other mosr prominent works of White.

The Civic Theater was initially built as a live theater but soon given to the Northern amusements on lease. But from the year 1973 the Newcastle City Council decided to concentrate more on live productions and completely obliterated cinema functioning.

Civic Theater received a facelift in the year 1992 for a $10.4 million dollar after which it has become more renowned as a tourist destination. The interiors of the theater are splendid. Light brown marbled floor with exquisite patterns on the ceiling , well lit and extremely spacious corridors will lead you to the main hall. The upholstered seats in a crescent row with red carpets on the ground assures to enjoy the performance in utmost comfort.

Marvel at the beautiful paintings put on the walls of the lounge. The theater is vibrant with splashes of hues spread here and there. Tourists would definitely like the open space in front of the theater.

The terrazzo balcony and the chandelier of the main auditorium are outstanding to look at. You will find the magnificence of art deco at its peak in the designing of this theater.

The civic Theater holds a diverse collection musicals, concerts, dance and other cultural events every year. The technicalities of the theater is world class. Whatever is needed to run a state of the art auditorium, every thing is present here.

The ticketing system of the Civic theater is very comprehensive and is available from the Civic Box office. There are a few off site venues from where tickets of the shows can be collected.

Don't worry about hunger in the middle of a performance or if you get tired after loitering around the theater admiring its stupor , drop in to the food joint called the Blue Star within the theater precincts.
