A brief History of Mattara, Newcastle: It was the year 1961, that this lovely festival came into being. Newcastle has always been known for its industrial and commercial importance. And to dissipate the notion, that Newcastle is only a smoky industrial and commercial hub of Australia, more and more importance was laid on the culture and beauty of the Newcastle. For this purpose over 90 people representing 40 organisations from horticultural, religious, cultural and sporting attended a meeting organised by Newcastle City Council on 6th April 1961 to develop the conception for the City's greatest festival. Why only the name Mattara? One of the most important tasks faced by the organisers was to decide a name that would portray a positive image and manifest the festivals' main purpose. Wanting a title that was unique and easily discernible, special attention was given to the kind of people Newcastle was hoping to attract. By drawing inspiration from the language of the Awabakal Aborigines which was used by the former natives of the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas; at the end, the name - Mattara - meaning - hand - was chosen for the name of the festival. Mattara is a festival marked by; extending the hand of friendship that Newcastle extends to the visitors all over the world. The opening day commenced, with the inauguration of outdoor Art Exhibition which took place in the Civic Park and therefore became the central point of all the activities of the festival of Mattara, Newcastle. 15 thousand people attended the opening of the festival. There was a huge line of around 40,000 people, who came to watch the first Mattara spectacle, which traversed through Hunter Street finishing at Broadmeadow Showground.
