Military Museum is Newcastle's best heritage attraction in Australia with a museum, few tunnels, cannons, shops and fantastic beach views. The Military Museum is located at Fort Scratchley. The Fort Scratchley is a historic place and it is a nineteenth century Coast Defense Fort and it is situated in a commanding position guarding the Hunter River. The Fort and cannons were positioned to protect the harbor. The Fort and cannons were established by Colonel Scratchley in 1882.
The tunnel complex and barracks were destroyed during both World War I and World War II and this is the only coastal fort to have an attack on an enemy vessel. This condition occurred during the sudden submarine attack on Newcastle in June 1942. During the Second World War, Fort Scratch ley's guns went into action against this attack. In this Fort, there are many original guns, emplacements, underground ammunition stores and magazines, as well as four rifled muzzle loading guns and two 6 inch Mark VII breech loading guns. These are the examples of the earliest and the latest guns used at the fort, in Newcastle. With the passing phase of time and with the changes in modern warfare, in 1972 the defense force vacated the area. Now, this has become Military Museum of this region. The Military Museum of Newcastle preserves the military heritage of the fort. It also maintains the following things:
- Tunnels,
