The Newcastle Regional Art Gallery is located in Laman Street. It was opened in 1977 by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. It hosts exhibitions regularly. In front of the building there is stainless steel sculpture, 'Space Two'. The gallery remains open from Tues-Sun, from 10am-5pm and here the entry is free. The Regional Art Gallery is located at 1 Laman Street, Newcastle. The Regional Art Gallery is directly behind Civic Park and also next to Newcastle Region Library. In front of the Regional Art Gallery, there is on-street parking. There is also a car park at the rear of the Gallery. The Gallery remains open from Tuesday to Sunday and from 10:00am until 5:00pm every day of the year, except Good Friday and Christmas Day. In the Regional Art Gallery, the admission is free. The Regional Art Gallery is sponsored and administered by Newcastle City Council with support from the New South Wales State Government. Funds are also generated from the corporate sector, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery Foundation and also from the corporate sector. The Gallery Society and volunteer guides support many of the Gallery's activities, events, and exhibitions. Nick Mitzevich was the Director of the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery since 2001. During this time, he started a transformation of the Gallery. This includes remarkable developments in the Collection, especially in the sector of contemporary Australian art. Currently Nick the new director of Regional Art Gallery is initiating the redevelopment plan for the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery which will bring substantial redevelopment in the Gallery. The Gallery Shop of the Regional Art Gallery offers a wide range of quality handcrafted glass, jewellery, textiles and ceramics as well as art books, catalogues and paper goods. Most of the items are produced by Hunter Valley artisans. This reflects the Gallery's commitment towards enriching the development of the local arts and community lives.
