The Location of Newcastle being the Australia's commercial and shipping hub was discovered on 9th of September 1797. Its discovery was identical to that of The Bahamas by Christopher Columbus. The only difference being that, Columbus went in search of discovering India and Lieutenant John Shortland, while searching for escaped convicts, found the Hunter River and an abundance of coal. Then again Lieutenant Govenor Paterson was sent by the King on 10th of June 1801 to probe the site and it was here that Paterson founded the settlement on the Hunter on 16th of June but it was later desolated in the year 1802. Then after a span of two years i.e. on 30th of March 1804 Lieutenant Charles Menzies came at the Hunter River to re-establish the settlement which was named Newcastle.
