In 1865, A plot of 30 acres of land was handed over to the council that is known as King Edward Park. All prominent features of the park are still remaining today, like:
- Designed Carriage drives,
- Lawn areas are set aside, and
- The building of a graceful rotunda.

At the southern end of King Edward Park there is an army fortification zone, which is located on the hilltop. Here you could find the military leftovers near the car parking area. The street is known as The Terrace. From this point, you can enjoy good views eastwards over the ocean. There are usually dozens of ships waiting for entrance into the harbor. In the north side, there is Newcastle Beach, Nobbys Head, and beyond that there is Stockton Beach. As you stare down towards the harbor you can see an obelisk at the end of the King Edward park. In The Terrace, you can observe the Victorian terrace houses. These give the street its name, The Terrace. The King Edward Park is a great picnic area.

Newcastle's King Edward Park has been the most challenging hill climbing venue since 1951, in Australia. Newcastle MG Car Club's premier annual event called The Mattara Hillclimb, takes place on the historic King Edward Park course every October since 1963. This popular event is now conducted over 2 days. During the Mattara Festival this event achieved outstanding success.

The NIB Music & Moonlight Concert is a beautiful romantic outdoor event, in the King Edward Park. As the moon rises over the King Edward Park, audience is serenaded by a selection of music from theatre and opera. This event helps people to enrich their lives.

In the King Edward Park, there is a part of land occupied by the Newcastle Bowling Club in 1965. It was leased to make bowling greens and bowling club buildings.
