The Obelisk, situated at the south of the Newcastle city, is a beautiful park bounded by Bindle Reserve Road, Ordnance Street & Wolfe Street on three sides. The Park also marks the spot of Newcastle's first windmill.

The Obelisk library is located on Obelisk hill, in Newcastle. The Obelisk hill is a popular park. From here you can enjoy expansive views of the lower Hunter plain.

A Brief History:

The Obelisk has suffered damage several times. In 1819, the Commandant Colonel Morisett at Newcastle, appealed to the then Governor for permission to build a windmill to be used for grinding flour. The mill was completed by the end of 1820, and was known as the 'Government Flour Mill'. As it was situated upon a natural hill the windmill was visible for many miles along the coast. But in 1847, as the Government decided to demolish the mill, it was purchased by a Newcastle resident. This roused a strong protest in shipping quarters. They protested strongly, as it was a landmark for them. This protest forced the Government to take steps in favor of the shipping quarters. However Obelisk Park was built on the spot, in 1850, where the old one was located.

The Obelisk was seriously damaged during the 1989 earthquake. The disaster struck on June 8 1985. On that year, as the impact of the earthquake, reservoir buried beneath, the Obelisk exploded. This caused the Windmill's roof to collapse and injured two young girls. An inquiry later, found that, the explosion was caused as a result of gas leaking into the reservoir from the main gas tank After the natural calamity, the reservoir got slowly filled over the time, and a reminiscent of the destructed reservoir remained as a mark of the event. Though the place remained untouched for many years since the destruction, a library called 'The Obelisk Library' was later built on Obelisk hill, in Newcastle. Now the Obelisk library is the most significant. In this library you could get everything, from DVD's, books, music to internet. School holiday activities also takes place in this library..
