Perth City Council is the former name of the local government body charged with the responsibility of administering the affairs of central Perth, Western Australia. Perth City Council has been renamed as City of Perth. The set up of City Council in Perth was declared in 20 September 1856 for the purpose of Perth administration. Eventually this body of Perth administration absorbed other areas such as North Perth, Leederville municipalities, Victoria Park and later territory from Perth Road Board, including the Belmont Park racecourse. The Perth City Council had grown up to have 27 members representing nine wards by 1962. A major turn around in the existence of the City Council of Perth, Australia came in 1994 with the passage of City of Perth Restructuring Act (1993).The whole build up of the Perth City Council till this time was again broken up, revised and significantly reduced as well. The parts that were created are City of Perth, Town of Victoria Park, Town of Cambridge, and Town of Vincent. On 6th may 1995, the first elections were held with 8 councilors and 1 mayor. Perth City Council or the City of Perth as it is called now, currently has 8 councilors, but no wards. The general norm of each councilor serving a four year term is maintained throughout. There are half-elections held every two years and the mayor is directly elected by the Perth population. Perth City Council also conducts regular community forums, to discuss the needs of the people and to interchange ideas to help develop the city further. Besides the Perth City Council has also imbibed the idea of Sister City which helps the citizens to get directly involved with other countries bringing long term benefits to the local communities of both countries. The sister cities of city of Perth are Kagoshima, Japan, Houston, Texas, U.S.A. and Vasto, Italy among others.
