Perth, the capital of Western Australia, was founded by Captain James Stirling in 1829. He established it as the political seat of the population of the Swan River Colony. Since then it has been the centre of government of Western Australia. The Parliament House is one of the most important buildings of the Government of Western Australia. It is home to the Parliament of Western Australia with both the Western Australian Legislative Council and the Western Legislative Assembly. All the major decisions regarding the state of Western Australia are taken at the Parliament House in Perth. It is basically the centre of decision making in the state and that is where the importance of the building lies. Perth has developed into a city that attracts thousands of tourists every year and today this magnificent building of governance has found its place in the long list of the various destinations of Sightseeing in Perth.
Construction of the Parliament House, Australia started in 1902. The first phase was completed by 1904. Work on the Eastern wing started in 1958 and completed on 1964. The Parliament House went through more work and extension again in 1978. This time it was extended to the South. In the 1980s there were proposals for more extension on the eastern part to join it with the St Georges Terrace. Solidarity Park was built opposite to the Parliament House by the protesting union workers.
