The official name of St. Mary's Cathedral in Perth, Australia is the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The foundation stone of the St Mary's Cathedral was laid in 1863 by the Bishop of Perth and the cathedral was opened on January 29, 1865. But the main credit for building the church goes to Father Martin Griver. The architect of this magnificent structure was Brother Joseph Ascione. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral. In 2005 work started with the intention of extending the cathedral. Today it is one of the major destinations for Sightseeing in Perth. St Mary's Cathedral in Perth was built in the Gothic style. The great depression and the Second World War resulted in restriction of flow of money. This has resulted in an incomplete building that stands today. The transepts and the sanctuary were built of sandstone. They have an elaborate Gothic style. They were constructed in the 1925-26 and designed by Cavanagh & Cavanagh. He designed it in the English style of perpendicular Gothic. The central alter and lectern was later added to the structure. This was consecrated on 12th August, 1973. The St Mary's Cathedral has an apt environment for organ music. The organ in the cathedral was built in 1910. Build by J.E. Dodd this organ was regarded as "the finest small organ in Australia" by composer Dr C. Edgar
